NGC 4666, which lies about 80 million light-years from Earth, is spewing gas in what’s called a “superwind.” The hot gas mostly emits light in the X-ray and radio parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, so it can’t be seen in this visible light image.
The X-rays flowing from NGC 4666 had previously been observed with the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton space telescope (image). Studying galaxies and clusters in many wavelengths of light tells astronomers more than a single image ever could.
